Rounded, not crushed.
River rock is tumbled smooth, which is why it reads as decorative where a crushed aggregate reads as construction. It also does not lock together, so it stays loose and moves underfoot, which makes it right for a creek bed and wrong for a path you walk every day.

Size and depth drive coverage.
Mexican river rock is stocked in graded sizes, caged and palletized and hand-labelled. A larger stone needs more depth to cover the ground under it, so the same tonnage covers noticeably less area as the size goes up.
