Fabric stops a base disappearing into the subgrade.
Without separation, aggregate gradually works down into soft soil underneath and soil works up into the aggregate. The base thins, the surface drops, and it happens slowly enough that it looks like settlement rather than the design fault it is. Leave the fabric out of a driveway base and you rebuild it in a few years.

Grid is structural, fabric is separation.
Geo-grid does a different job: it ties a retaining wall back into the fill behind it and is specified by the wall it reinforces, not bought by feel. Sold by the roll, so width and length both matter.
